  1.                          A Brief Explanation
  2.  
  3. The document that you are about to read is a Black Magic created Hypertext
  4. document.  The purpose of this short prelude is to introduce you to the
  5. concepts of hypertext if you don't know them, and to teach you how to read
  6. hypertext if you don't know.  If you do know this information, please go to
  7. the end of this document and activate the Link there.
  8.  
  9. Hypertext is based on the concept of "Expanding Information".  With hypertext,
  10. blocks of information (text or graphics) can be linked to other blocks of
  11. information.  Once two blocks of information have been linked together, they
  12. provide an instant "gateway" to the other.   This is the expanding information
  13. nature of hypertext.  A single block of information can lead to another and so
  14. on.  Information can literally expand at the user's request.

  16.      Black Magic

  18. Black Magic is a product to create Hypertext documents similar to the above
  19. description.  With Black Magic documents, information can be linked in three
  20. different ways; with Note Links, Reference Links, and Replacement Links.  A
  21. Note Link calls up a small window on screen that contains a "note" to the
  22. user.  A Reference link is used to transport the reader to Another place in
  23. the document.  Replacement Links are used to swap one block of information for
  24. another.   Graphic Links are used to make a graphic image a Link Originator. 
  25. Although Graphics can be any of the three types of Link, only the one symbol
  26. below is used to indicate this.  All Links are indicated through the use of
  27. colored symbols embedded in the text.  The symbols surround the Link
  28. Originator (See Below).  Hypertext Links are indicated through the following
  29. symbols:

  32.           Reference Link           Green Triangle
  33.           Replacement Link         Pink Square
  34.           Graphic Link             Blue Circle with a "X" in the Center

  37.      Terminology 
  38.  
  39. Link Originator - The starting point to the link.  It is surrounded by the
  40.                symbols to indicate that it is a hypertext link.
  41. Link End - The other side to a Link originator, where reader is taken after a
  42.                link is traversed. 
  43. Traverse - The act of traveling from a Link originator to its associated Link
  44.                End.

  46.      Reading A Document  
  47.           
  48. A Black Magic document is read through the use of the reader programs.  Three
  49. of these reader programs exist:READEGA.COM (For the Enhanced Graphics
  50. Adaptor), READHGA.COM (For the Hercules Graphics Adaptor), AND READCGA.COM
  51. (For the Color Graphics Adaptor).  To use one of the Reader program to read a
  52. Black document, type the following from the DOS prompt:

  54.      READXYZ filename.mag
  55.  
  56. Once the document is in the Reader program, it is read using the following
  57. keys:
  58.  
  59.           Traverse Link            <F1>/Left Mouse Button pressed between the
  60.                                              symbols
  61.           Return from Link          <Esc>/Right Mouse Button  pressed anywhere
  62.                                              in the Link
  63.           Movement                  <ArrowKeys>, <PgUp> & <PgDn>/Mouse

  65. When you are reading a document, and you come across a hypertext Link in the
  66. text, move the cursor between the symbols and press <F1>.  This will activate
  67. the Link, traversing you to the Link End.  To return from the Link End pres
  68. <Esc>.  This will bring you one link back from your current position.

  70. When you come across a hypertext link in a Graphic, move the cursor over the
  71. Graphic Link (Circle with an "X") and press <F1> to traverse the Link.

  73. And that's about all you need to know to read a hypertext document.  Press
  74. <F1> between the Symbols below to continue with the document.
